Hi there, my wife and I are looking to rent somewhere affordable in the North Chicagoland area, and we're having real trouble finding pet-friendly accommodations.  Almost all of the online listings have a no dogs policy, but I'm wondering if/how many of those policies are flexible.  In other words, can a listing say "No Dogs Allowed" but be negotiable on the policy after discussion with the prospective tenant?  Our dog is very well behaved and we'd be willing to pay a deposit or something if necessary.

In my experience, most landlords are not flexible when it comes to dogs. Besides the extra issues they may cause, landlords are also under pressure from their home owners insurance coverage, which charges extra. When a profit is slim on a property, every dollar counts.

can be negotiable, but don't count on it happening
