What do I do if my pool gets a non-compliance notification for direct suction?

One of the safest ways to resolve this violation involves the installation of a collector tank.

According to the Department of Health (DOH) “There has been no reported entrapment death nor injury associated with a gravity drainage type facility.” Pool and Spa Designs, Inc., and the DOH believe that a properly engineered gravity drainage system using a collector tank is the safest anti-entrapment option, and encourage you to seriously consider this option. The next safest option involves drain disablement, although this option is appropriate for only some existing pools depending on engineering constraints. Pool and Spa Designs, Inc., and the DOH staff believe that both of these solutions are permanent, requiring no maintenance or monthly inspection, and are considered the most effective in preventing injuries and fatalities (and meeting the VGB compliance), since they do not depend on mechanical devices that can fail in an emergency.
