I found a young man to take over my 1 year lease (May 31st) as a sublessee or as a lease for a 6 month lease.  My landlord decided not to give him a lease until he "vetted" him as a tenant.  Therefore, as I was pressured to move, I agreed to have him as a sublessee for the first month and after that the landlord would offer him, or not offer him, a lease.  Long story short, he gave my landlord a security deposit of 1 month when he moved in.   My landlord is still holding my security deposit as well.

My question is, is this legal?  I have had a lot of issues with this landlord and have heard other stories from his clients, tenants and general community.  The way I see it, I should be holding the subtenant's security deposit until he is officially on the lease with the Landlord.

Any input is much appreciated.
