I own and manage an apartment building about 45 minutes from where I live. Recently a tenant complained of marijuana smell (the building is in Idaho where marijuana is still strictly illegal) and so I instructed her to notify the police. She did not notify the police at that time, but promised she would if she smelled it again. The next week, the police responded to a call about marijuana smoke at the apartment building, and they said that the caller gave my name! I am not the one who called, and there is no other person in the building with my name. I am fairly confident that the caller was the same tenant who had previously complained.
My questions are: Is this a crime - to use someone else's name when reporting a crime? If so, should I notify the police that this has happened?
I am also concerned that the tenant might be trying to retaliate against me (albeit strangely) because her lease is not being renewed, and I have been gathering documentation of our interactions in the event that I need to take her to court. Would this incident (her using my name to report a crime) be something I should also get documentation of?
